Kamru Hamrani is perhaps one of the unsung heroes of the Atlanta showbiz scene.
The humble promoter heads YK Enterprises and to date has never brought a show to Atlanta which is substandard, be it plays or musical concerts.
Yaadon Ki Baraat, a musical concert honoring the legendary musical stalwarts of the Indian film industry, at Earthlink live on July 16th was no exception. It didn’t have the glitzy bollywood stars, or legendary singers, and yet the entire show by Sanjeevani, Mohammed Salamat, Sanjay Sawant and Sujata Samta mesmerized the audience.
The emcee Naveen regaled every one with Urdu couplets both poignant and humorous, and hammed it up as well, as he introduced each singer to the audience.
Between them the four singers recreated the magic of the golden era of music, which saw the remarkable talent of Mukesh, Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat Mehmood, K.L Saigal, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Geeta Dutt, Shamshad Begum to name a few. It was also an era when music was set to extraordinary lyrics written by poets that were a class by themselves. That is why these songs are still evergreen, evoking the same appreciation and applause whenever and wherever they are performed.
The stage became the hallowed grounds for golden oldies that night. Sanjeevani (pictured left) who first hit the limelight through Antakshari and Saregama, and then enchanted audiences with her block buster chori chori jab nazaren mili from Kareeb, is a natural on stage. The joy with which she sings and moves to the music is evident in every nuance of her performance. She can sing Hawa mein udta jai mora lal dupatta, jiya bekarar hai, meri ankhon mein bas gaya koi re, mujhe kisi se pyaar ho gaya, chod gaye balam, barsaat mein hum se mile tum and Kuch Dil ne Kaha in the sweet voice of Lata and then belt out saiyaan dil mein aana re, teri mehfil mein kismet aazma kar hum bhi dekhenge in the voice of Shamshad Begum with equal ease. She crossed over with Mukesh’s patli kamar hai and then sang the beautiful semi classical Rafi-Lata duet kuhu kuhu bole koyaliya as a solo.
Sanjay Sawant (pictured right) is a singer who has won rave reviews where ever he has performed, apart from cutting a hit cd 8 months ago. His nephew Abhijeet won the first ever Indian Idol competition and credits his uncle as being an integral part of his success.
Sanjay walked on stage and mesmerized the audience with his vocal range be it O mere dil ke chain by Kishore Kumar to jalte hain jiske liye by Talat Mehmood, to gham diye mustakil by K.L Saigal to kasme vaade pyar wafa sab and the scintillating laga chunari mein daag by Manna Dey. Sawant sang the songs as closely as he could in the singer’s voice. Manna Dey would have been especially proud if he had heard him sing before him, all this while recovering from a bad throat.
Mohammed Salamat (pictured left), who made a wonderful debut in the movie Hum dil de chuke sanam has a dulcet velvety voice ideally suited for singing Rafi’s songs. The charming singer who has a striking resemblance to cricket star Sachin Tendulkar, bowled over the audience as he began his segment behind the curtains with the haunting rafi number-meri awaaz suno, pyaar ka raag suno, followed by badi door se ayen hai, chaahonga main tujhe sanj sawere, yeh mera prem patra padh kar, and the wonderful qawali from the movie Amar Akbar Anthony-pardah ha pardah hai among others.
Sujata Samta (pictured right) is a charming up and coming singer whose husky voice is ideally suited to songs by Geeta Dutt, though she began with Asha Bhosle’s evergreen number Aao huzoor tumko baharon mein le chaloon and then moved on to Geeta Dutt with babuji dheere chalna.
The selection of duets too comprised of beautiful lilting numbers like sawan ka mahina, the rather difficult number tu chupi hai kahan by Sanjeevani and Sanjay Sawant and the lilting yala yala dil le gayi while Mohammed Salamat and Sujata sang Woh jab yaad aye bahut yaad aye, jhilmil sitaron ka angaan hoga and chup gaye sare nazare. Others like aja sanam madhur chandni mein hum tum, pyar hua ikrara hua, and the lovely shola jo bhadke by Sanjeevani and Sanjay Sawant brought the house down. Salamat and Sujata regaled the audience with do sitaron ka zameen par hai and oh hasina zulfon wali. There were a couple of duets between Sanjeevani and Sujata which was very refreshing. They did an exceptionally good job of teri mehfil mein kismet azma kar hum bhi dekhenge from Mughle azam. Sanjeevani also made it a point to give some interesting tid bits about each song she sang.
The singers ended the evening by giving an amazing rendition largely led by Sanjeevani of Vande matram dedicating it to soldiers world over. The show went on past 1 a.m. and people still wanted more. The live band comprised of veterans and artists par excellence from the film industry and the show was considered to be better than some of the concerts by more famous artists that had been show cased it.
The encore performance on the 19th of August is a must see for every music lover.
